It is with great sadness that the JCPD announces the untimely tragic line of duty death of police office Melvin Santiago
UPON THEIR ARRIVAL AN ARMED ACTOR IDENTIFIED AS LAWRENCE CAMPBELL OPENED FIRE ON OFFICER SANTIAGO AS HE ATTEMPTED TO EXIT THE POLICE VEHICLE. AFTER FATALLY INJURING OFFICER SANTIAGO HE DIRECTED HIS GUNFIRE ON A RESPONDING POLICE VEHICLE STRIKING THE WINDSHIELD MULTIPLE TIMES.
RESPONDING UNITS EXCHANGED GUNFIRE WITH THE ACTOR FATALLY WOUNDING HIM AT THE SCENE.
OFFICER SANTIAGO WAS APPOINTED TO THE JERSEY CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT IN JULY 2013 AND UPON GRADUATION WAS ASSIGNED TO THE WEST DISTRICT.
WE SHARE THE TRAGIC LOSS OF OUR FALLEN BROTHER MELVIN WITH HIS FAMILY.

Due to limited parking, attending out of town units are requested to park at the Westside Station NJ Transit Hudson Bergen Light Rail Parking Lot located on Claremont Avenue between West Side Avenue and Mallory Avenue. Shuttle busses will provide transportation to and from the funeral home.

The marching contingent from McLaughlin Funeral home to Saint Aloysius Church will consist of Jersey City Police Department ONLY. Other departments/agencies sending representation are requested to report to Lincoln Park located adjacent to the church. Responding units are asked to use the Lincoln Park Duncan Avenue Route 1/9 truck entrance where Hudson County Sheriffs personnel will assist with vehicle staging. Report time is 0930 hrs.

It is requested that due to logistical constraints graveside participation will be limited to JERSEY CITY POLICE PERSONNELL ONLY.
Perimeter security protocols have been established as per direction of the North Arlington PD, Bergen County PD and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and will be strictly enforced.
Agency/Departments sending Honor Guard Units are requested to report to St. Aloysius Church @ 0930 hrs. On Friday July 18th 2014.
